Runway is the most complete AI video production platform we have reviewed. Its agent turns a brief into finished videos and campaigns, Aleph 2.0 edits existing footage, and Runway Ads now publishes and tests ad variants on Meta, Google and TikTok. Its own Gen-4.5 model no longer leads quality rankings, but leading third-party models are available inside the platform. Recommended for marketing and creative teams producing video at volume that will manage credit budgets; occasional users have cheaper, simpler options.
Runway shortens the path from creative brief to published video. A marketing team can go from concept to a multi-scene, scored video in one session, then produce versions for each platform, language and season without a new shoot. That cuts production cost and lets small teams test far more ad creative than before.
Runway Ads links creative output to ad performance, so decisions about what to make next rest on results rather than guesswork; Runway’s own internal campaigns showed large gains, though these are not independent results. Pooled team credits, brand kits and approval steps help keep output consistent as more people produce content. The trade-off is cost control: without model limits and credit caps, spending can rise quickly.

Runway is an AI platform for creating and editing video, images and audio. It has grown from a video generator into a full production tool: an AI agent builds finished videos and campaigns, a new ads tool publishes and tests creative on Meta, Google and TikTok, and teams can share credits and brand assets. Its strengths are the most complete workflow in AI video, strong editing of existing footage and access to many leading models in one place. Its limits are credit costs that are hard to predict, an own model that no longer leads quality rankings, and default training on non-Enterprise content. Verdict: recommended for marketing and creative teams that produce video at volume; casual users have cheaper options.

How many versions of one video ad does your team need today? One per platform, one per language, several to test. That volume is the problem Runway now sets out to solve.
Runway is made by Runway AI, Inc., a New York company founded in 2018 by Cristóbal Valenzuela (CEO), Anastasis Germanidis and Alejandro Matamala. It became known as one of the first serious AI video tools, used in film, TV and advertising, and it co-released the original Stable Diffusion image model in 2022. In February 2026 it raised $315 million at a $5.3 billion valuation, with Nvidia, Adobe Ventures and AMD Ventures among the investors.
Today Runway describes itself as “intelligent tools for scaling content and teams”. You can still generate a single clip, but the platform is now built around an agent that plans and produces finished work, an editing model for existing footage, and tools for teams and advertisers.
Our previous review was published on 28 July 2026. These changes matter most for buyers:

| 1 Sep 2026 | Unlimited plan replaced by Max for monthly subscribers (Max launched 1 June) | More credits, but no unlimited relaxed-speed generation |
| 4 Sep 2026 | Self-serve Team plan with pooled credits | Teams of 2–9 can share credits, brand kits and projects |
| Sep 2026 | Plugins for Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve | Runway works inside editors’ existing tools |

Treat any feature, plan or pricing detail in our earlier review as replaced by this version.
Runway suits businesses where video is a regular, high-volume need rather than an occasional project. The clearest fits are:
Who should probably choose another tool?
Runway Agent is a conversational partner that turns an idea into a finished video. You describe what you need, add reference images, and it proposes a concept, drafts the story and visual direction, then builds a multi-scene video with voiceover, dialogue and music. Since Agent 2.0 (June 2026) it can plan full campaigns, cut versions for Reels, Stories, YouTube and feeds, localise for new markets and suggest the next ads to test from performance data you upload.
Business value: a marketer without editing skills can get a usable campaign draft in one session. Teams can save repeat processes as shared “skills”, such as a standard product launch video.
Runway Ads connects to your Meta, Google and TikTok ad accounts. It finds your best-performing ads, creates on-brand variants for each placement and language, publishes the ones you approve, then reads the results back to shape the next round. Human approval is on by default, every variant passes an automatic brand check, and budget guardrails limit how fast spending can change.
Business value: far more creative testing for the same team. Runway reports that, using it internally, weekly ad volume rose from 77 to about 900, return on ad spend roughly doubled and cost per subscriber fell 41%. These are Runway’s own figures on its own campaigns, not independent results.
Aleph 2.0 edits video you already have. You can swap a product, change the background or lighting, remove an object or restyle a scene, and preview the change as a still image before paying to render the full clip. One edit can be carried across several shots. Clips can be up to 30 seconds at 1080p.
Business value: one shoot can become seasonal, regional and product-specific versions without going back on set.
Runway’s own Gen-4.5 sits alongside a large catalogue of third-party models, including ByteDance’s Seedance, Kling, Google’s Veo 3.1, Alibaba’s Wan, Nano Banana image models and ElevenLabs voices. All of them run on one credit balance in one interface.
Business value: your team can use whichever model currently gives the best result without managing several subscriptions.
Workflows connect several steps, such as generate, edit, upscale and add sound, into a repeatable pipeline. App Studio, launched on 26 October 2026, turns a plain-language description, a workflow or an agent session into a simple hosted app that uses your brand kit. Apps can be shared with teammates or published by link.
Business value: your best creative person can package their process so a regional marketer or salesperson can produce on-brand assets alone.
The Team plan adds pooled credits, shared projects, brand kits and comments. Professional editors get plugins for Premiere Pro, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve, plus ProRes, HDR and 4K export options. Developers get an API with published per-second prices and a “model router” that picks the best model for each request within a cost cap. Through MCP (Model Context Protocol, a common way to connect AI assistants to other tools), you can also generate Runway content from ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor.
Business value: Runway fits into the tools your team already uses rather than replacing them.
Getting started is simple. You sign up on the web, receive 125 free credits and can type a prompt within minutes. The Agent is the easiest way in for non-specialists, because you describe the result rather than learn each tool.
The harder part is mastery. Runway now has many entry points: Agent, single-model Tool Mode, a timeline editor, Workflows, Edit Studio, App Studio and Ads. It also offers dozens of models, each with a different credit cost. Getting consistent quality and keeping spend under control takes practice.
Documentation is solid: a help center, developer docs with clear pricing tables, a detailed changelog, tutorials and an active Discord community. Mobile apps exist for iPhone and Android.
Future Signal Tip: Start every new user on the Agent with a small brief and a brand kit. Move them to Workflows or App Studio only once a process is worth repeating.
When Runway launched Gen-4.5 in December 2025, it ranked first on Artificial Analysis’ text-to-video leaderboard and on Video Arena, ahead of Google and OpenAI. That lead did not last. By April 2026 a combined ranking of public leaderboards placed Gen-4.5 17th of 41 models. On the current Artificial Analysis leaderboards, no Runway model appears in the top 15. Models from Alibaba, MiniMax, ByteDance and Google now lead.
Runway’s homepage still calls Gen-4.5 “the world’s best video model”. Independent rankings do not support that claim today.
The practical answer for buyers is that Runway hosts many of the models that overtook it, so you can still reach top-tier quality inside Runway. Its own strengths remain editing (Aleph 2.0) and the workflow around generation.
Other points to know:
Runway’s integrations focus on creative and advertising tools rather than general office software.
| Integration | What it does |
|---|---|
| Meta, Google, TikTok | Runway Ads publishes approved ads and reads results back |
| Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects | Generate and restyle footage inside the timeline |
| DaVinci Resolve | Runway tools inside Resolve |
| Adobe Firefly | Runway’s Gen-4.5 is available as a partner model |
| ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor | Generate Runway images and video in chat via MCP |
| Figma, Dropbox, Notion | Agent connectors on the Team plan |
| Zapier and Make | Automate generation and upscaling from other apps |
| Runway Dev API | Build video generation into your own products |
We found no native integrations with Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or CRM systems. For most marketing teams this matters less than the ad platform and editor connections.
Runway charges through monthly credits. Every plan includes a credit allowance, and each model uses credits at a different rate. Runway’s own Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits per second of video, so a 10-second clip costs 120 credits.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per month) | Credits per month | About how much Gen-4.5 video |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 125 one-time | ~10 seconds |
| Standard | $15 | $12 | 625 | ~52 seconds |
| Pro | $35 | $28 | 2,250 | ~3 minutes |
| Max | $95 | $76 | 9,500 (rolls over 1 month) | ~13 minutes |
| Team (per seat, 2–9 seats) | $69 | $55 | 6,900, pooled | ~9.5 minutes per seat |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom |
Prices in US dollars from Runway’s pricing page, October 2026. Video estimates are our calculation and assume no retries or other models; real output will be lower.
What do you actually get for the money?
Credits on Standard and Pro reset each month with no rollover. Extra credits can be bought in blocks of at least 1,000, and those never expire. Developers pay $0.01 per credit through the API.
Watch out: premium third-party models cost much more than Gen-4.5. Through the API, Seedance 2.0 at 4K uses 150 credits per second, more than twelve times Gen-4.5. Set budgets before giving a team access to every model.
| Alternative | Best for | Why choose it instead |
|---|---|---|
| Kling AI | Cost-conscious creators and social teams | Lower entry price and strong video quality, without Runway’s team and ads tools |
| Google Veo (via Flow and Gemini) | Businesses already paying for Google’s AI plans | Strong model with native audio, bundled into a subscription you may already have |
| Adobe Firefly | Adobe-based creative teams | Commercially safe models, content credentials and Creative Cloud integration; it also offers Runway’s Gen-4.5 |
| HeyGen | Training, sales and presenter videos | Avatars and translation built for talking-head business video |
| Pika | Simple, low-cost social clips | Cheaper and easier for quick short videos |
Runway’s story this year is a shift from model maker to production platform. A year ago, the question was whether Runway had the best video model. Today, the honest answer is no, and Runway has responded by hosting the models that beat it inside a workflow its rivals do not match.
That is a smart bet. Generation quality is becoming a commodity that changes leader every few months. The lasting value sits in what happens around it: brand control, editing, team collaboration and, now, the link to ad performance. Runway Ads is the clearest signal. When an AI tool can create, publish and learn from ads on its own, creative production starts to look like a measurable, automated process.
The risks are real. Google and Adobe can bundle similar workflows into suites businesses already pay for, and multi-model aggregators compete on the same pitch. Credit pricing has already changed once this year.
Watch three things: whether Runway Ads delivers results for customers, not just for Runway; whether Runway’s next own model regains the lead; and whether training terms tighten for smaller business plans.
Overall rating: 8.0 / 10
Runway is the most complete AI video production platform we have reviewed. It is best for marketing teams, agencies and creative teams that need a steady flow of video and image content and want generation, editing and ad testing in one place.
Value for money depends on volume. Team and Max offer fair value for heavy users; Standard is too small for regular work, and credit costs need active management.
Future Signal recommends Runway for teams that produce video at scale and will put budget controls in place. Occasional users, presenter-video needs and businesses that cannot accept training on their content should look at the alternatives above.
Yes, substantially. Since July 2026 Runway has launched Runway Ads, App Studio, a self-serve Team plan, Adobe and DaVinci Resolve plugins and many new third-party models. The Unlimited plan has been replaced by Max, and the Terms of Use were updated on 23 October 2026.
Yes. The Free plan gives 125 one-time credits, enough for roughly ten seconds of Gen-4.5 video, with access to a selection of models and 5GB of storage. Free users cannot buy extra credits, and outputs carry a watermark. It is for testing, not business use.
Individuals producing video regularly should start with Pro. Teams of two to nine people should choose the Team plan for pooled credits and shared brand assets. Larger organisations, or any business that needs SSO or a no-training guarantee, should talk to Runway about Enterprise.
Runway replaced Unlimited with Max. Max costs the same $95 a month and includes 9,500 credits with a one-month rollover, but it no longer offers unlimited generations at relaxed speed. Monthly Unlimited subscribers were moved to Max on 1 September 2026.
Not according to current independent leaderboards. Gen-4.5 ranked first when it launched in December 2025 but now sits outside the top 15 on Artificial Analysis. Runway offers several of the leading models, such as Seedance, Kling, Veo and Wan, inside its platform.
On non-Enterprise plans, yes by default. Runway’s Terms of Use allow it to use your inputs and outputs to train and improve its models, and we found no opt-out. Runway’s Enterprise terms state that customer content may not be used as training data.
Runway Ads can publish to Meta, Google and TikTok, but human approval is switched on by default. Teams can allow automatic publishing for specific campaigns once they trust the output. We recommend keeping approval on during any pilot.
Runway holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification, encrypts data in transit and at rest, and offers SSO and audit controls for Enterprise. The main business risk is the default training licence on non-Enterprise plans, so confidential or client footage belongs on Enterprise.
Runway’s biggest strengths are its complete production workflow, its strong editing of existing footage, and access to many leading models with team and enterprise controls on top. Its biggest limitations are credit costs that are hard to predict, an own model that has lost its quality lead, limited support and default training on content outside Enterprise.
The ideal customer is a marketing or creative team that produces video every week and wants to move faster from brief to published, tested creative. For that buyer, Runway earns a central place in the AI stack.
Our advice: start with one repeatable task on the Team plan, set model and credit limits from day one, keep human approval on for ads, and expand only when the time saved and the results are clear.
Our final assessment after evaluating features, performance, value, and business impact:
Runway deserves a place in the stack of any marketing or creative team that produces video every week. It offers the fullest workflow in AI video, from concept and generation through editing, sound, formatting and now ad publishing, and it gives access to the strongest current models alongside its own. Teams of two to nine people should start on the Team plan, which offers the best value; larger and regulated organisations should go straight to Enterprise for SSO, credit caps and a contract that rules out training on their content.
It is less suitable for occasional users, who will pay for credits they do not use, and for teams that mainly need presenter videos. Its own model has lost its quality lead and support is limited, so run a measured pilot. Overall, recommended with clear budget controls.
